Congratulations on becoming a mum! Motherhood is life changing in so many ways. Those first months bonding and getting to know your baby are such a wonderful and special time but bring with it a whole new set of challenges and unknowns. So many new skills to learn and worries to counter – it can become overwhelming, to say the least.
But there are lots of little tips and tricks that can help those early days become easier, leaving you more time, space and energy to enjoy your little one.
We at Super Rewards are mums as well and understand this mixed bag phase of motherhood, so here’s the rundown of our top 10 life hacks for new mums:
1. Don’t try to be ‘Supermum’
Don’t expect too much of yourself as a new mum. Having a shower or drinking a hot cup of tea is a major achievement! Celebrate the little victories and don’t believe you have to be ‘Supermum’ – because in actual fact it’s a myth.
2. Get organised
Put a small basket in every room you use regularly and fill it with your baby’s essential bits and pieces– nappies, wipes, cream, vests, and bibs are all good things to have to hand.
3. Make time for yourself
If a friend offers to babysit for an hour so you can have a nap – say yes. If a neighbour offers to cook you dinner – say yes. If your partner offers to do the night shift so you can get some well-earned rest – yep you guessed it – say yes!
4. Dealing With Those Nappies
You know the ones. The ones that make you wonder how someone so small could cause such destruction. When those nappy explosions strike use the little shoulder flaps on your baby’s vest to slip it down their body rather than over their head. This makes the clean-up job so much easier.
5. Get out and get moving
Who knew that leaving the house could be so difficult? Simply getting dressed and out the door is a definite challenge when you are a new mum. Our advice – prepare ahead. Try to have a baby bag ready by the door at all times, perhaps prepared the night before (your partner can definitely help with this one). Nappies, wipes, cream, bibs, nappy bags, and a change of clothes can remain in it at all times – so you can simply add a bottle or any other necessary items before you leave.
6. Sleep when your baby is asleep
We know, this seems obvious, but there are plenty of mums who either stay up worrying, don’t think their child will be asleep for long and use the time for other things, or just choose not to get on a schedule with their child. If you want to sleep during your first year, try out this rule; you won’t regret it.
7. Don’t run into the room at the drop of a hat (cry)
If you swoop in to save your baby from awareness at the sign of the first startle, you’ll never know if they’re truly finished sleeping. Sometimes they wake themselves or are crying a bit in their sleep — leave them for a minute to see if they stop before waking them fully by going in and picking them up.
8. Put your baby to sleep with background noise
If you sleep train your babe in a quiet room, chances are they’ll be a lighter sleeper, affected by any and every noise. Use a white noise machine or app, or try a ceiling or standing fan pointed away from them just to make some noise.
9. Capture those moments
Capture every expression, every milestone — just everything. This time goes so quickly, and there are not enough photos you can take to really remember this fleeting time.
10. Stay on top of your finances
You’re thinking “Finances? That’s the last thing on my mind.” But, it’s super easy. To start with, you can top up your superannuation every time you shop for your baby (and for yourself!) with Super Rewards. Why should you be thinking about super at this time? Well it’s a particularly crucial time – with most women not earning an income while on maternity leave, this means no super contributions too. Which certainly add up over time, and particularly when you’re out of the workforce having multiple children. Here’s a great chart to illustrate this:
How does Super Rewards work? Step 1: You become a Super Rewards member. Step 2: when you shop, our retailing partners will contribute the cash rewards directly into your super. It’s that easy.
We’ve designed Super Rewards so that it integrates seamlessly into your everyday life. Because that’s what new mums like you need. A solution that works effectively, easily, and in the background.
And finally – don’t forget to sit down, take a deep breath, and enjoy every precious second with your baby. With raising children, the days are long, but the years are short.
